SKITTLE PINS AND BALLS

ABOUT US

Located in Gloucestershire where the game of skittles is still very popular; Skittle Pins and Balls is two Skittle players who produce sets of Skittle Balls and Skittle Pins as well as refurbish existing sets of Skittle Balls in order to keep the traditional game of skittles alive. All the turning is carried out as a part time hobby, with the work being done in spare time.

NEW WOODEN SKITTLE BALLS ARE UNAVAILABLE PLEASE READ MY SKITTLE BALL NOTICE, Skittle Pins are not a problem.

The availability of New Wooden Skittle Balls is now almost impossible as the Timber (Lignum Vitae) is no longer being imported into the country in the sizes required. Added to that the quality of timber in my last orders has not been great; this is due to the wood being an endangered species and virtually extinct, therefore what is left has been scraps. As a result I'm only likely to be able to offer reconditioned sets of skittle balls and these depend on the size of the sets I get hold of. The timber being old is generally of better quality and I sell sets at a lower cost. I currently have a few sets available and hope to have some more available shortly, if you are interested have a look at my REFURBISHED SETS page.

I'm able to skim existing sets as long as they are Wooden, Tufnol or Permalli; this reduces the size slightly. The reduction in size is dependant on the condition of the set as it stands before skimming and is a much cheaper option.

If you Skittle League allows you to use Rubber Skittle balls these appear to be more readily available, I can put you in touch with various suppliers.

Please note the game of skittles has numerous variations depending on the county it is being played so if you are enquiring regarding a set of pins and / or balls it would be appreciated if you could include the size and style you are looking for. It helps me to offer a price without the need to go back and forth.

Many teams prefer wooden skittle equipment as opposed to newer Composite Resin Skittle Balls or Plastic Skittle Pins; this is what we look to provide. We use Beech or Sycamore from local timber sources to produce Skittle Pins; all of which are turned from a single piece of wood and not multiple pieces bonded together. These are then finished with Linseed oil to help preserve the timber. Skittle Balls have been traditionally turned from Lignum Vitae; this is an extremely hard and heavy wood which comes from the Rainforest. However this is becoming extremely difficult to source as it is on the CITIES List II of endangered species; as a result we are looking at alternative options such as Angelim Vermelho.

UPDATE REGARDING LIGNUM VITAE (1st September 2019) - Put Simply I don't know when or even if Lignum Skittle Balls will ever be available again. My Timber Merchant has not contacted me to confirm when or if he will receive his order of Lignum Vitae; cylinders. There is also an issue with the Quality of the Timber; which I am unable to guarantee, therefore any new sets (if the do become available) would be sold on an As Seen Basis.

Lignum Vitae; comes from the South American Rainforest and has been harvested to near extinction. The Timber needs to be imported as there are trade restrictions under CITES (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, also known as the Washington Convention - Lignum Vitae comes in this category). Reconditioned sets are available; however it is extremely unlikely that these will be any bigger the 4 3/4" in diameter.

We can also refurbish existing sets of Skittle Balls so they are like new, these can be Wooden; Lignum Vitae; Angelim Vermelho; Tufnol; or Permali sets; however we are unable to turn Composite Resin Skittle Balls.

We have received enquiries regarding skimming of Wooden Skittle Pins; unfortunately this is rarely possible as in most cases the wood has dried out so much that if turned pieces would break off. Topping and Tailing (i.e. reducing the height of the pin but cutting the ends to make the base flat) is possible, along with applying Linseed Oil however it is extremely unlikely that we could refurbish sets.

We have supplied Teams, Pubs and Clubs from Herefordshire, Worcestershire, Somerset, Dorset and all across the South West including Devon and Cornwall as well as South Wales with their regional variants of skittle pins as well as the required size of skittle balls. If we are unable to offer the item you are looking for we are happy to point you in the right direction.

As there are regional variations you are strongly advised to check what you require before ordering; please visit our Regional Variations page where you will see images of the different styles of skittle pins that we are aware of and can produce. If you have something different then let us know, Skittle Pins are turned to order so we can produce most shapes and sizes.

Teams, Pubs or Clubs are responsible for ensuring they order the correct style and/or size of Skittle Pins or Balls. Items are turned to order therefore you may be requested to place your order in writing (text or email) before they are turned. Should you order incorrectly, if unused the items may be returned; however there will be a £25 restocking charge on top of any additional costs. I reserve the right not to accept returned items if they are as per your order (e.g. if used or custom for a limited region). Please note if sets are used I will not do an exchange. I have had to introduce this policy due to a increase in instances where the wrong item has been ordered.

Unsure of the dimensions? Use the Diameter Calculator where you can calculate the diameter of your item simply by measuring the circumference*.

Subject to size and condition we will also consider purchasing any old items, especially Skittle Balls, or taking in part exchange against an existing order.

If you require any further information please feel free to contact us either by email or by telephone; please note as I work during the day I might not be able to take your call, leave a message and I will endeavour to get back to you.

* - Please note the value is approximate and dependant on obtaining the correct circumference value.

IMPORTANT NOTE REGARDING WOODEN SKITTLE BALLS:

All my Timber has been used up - New Sets of Wooden Skittle Balls are unavailable and I cannot guarantee that any more will become available

I doubt I will receive any more Lignum Vitae; and cannot guarantee the quality of the material.

I have not been able to source Angelim Vermehlo so cannot guarantee when or if these will become available again.

Limited smaller size recondition sets (4 3/4" and below) may be available as I receive old sets and skimming is still available.
